W.C. Fields walks into a bar one morning and asks bartender Shemp Howard: "Say, was I in here last night and did I spend a twenty dollar bill?"
"Why Yeh," Shemp replies.
"Good, good." returns W.C. in some relief, "I was worried I'd lost it."

Hey Nef, now that you live closer to me, you are welcome to come and visit anytime since none of my so called friends here ever come to visit. Ever shoot a Martini Henry?
You and all of the members here are welcome any time, and i mean that...

Me and Bromhead's practically neighbors...only live 900 mile apart!
I will keep the invitation in mind, Mike. As you may recall, I have a brother who lives in Hastings and I may be dropping in to see him sometime in the coming year.

Had a rude awakening last night. It sounded like some huge generator grinding itself to pieces. Man, was it loud. The 'explosion' sounds came in bursts, spaced about five seconds apart and continued for at least an hour.
Here's what the local newspaper, THE HERALD ZEITUNG, had to say about it:
Natural gas discharge cause of loud noise From staff reports The Herald-Zeitung
Published November 6, 2007
The sound of what many thought to be an explosion early this morning was a natural gas pipeline discharging natural gas, New Braunfels police said.
Officers responded to a loud noise in the 3300 block of Morningside Drive just after 1 a.m. After investigating the situation, officers contacted Energy Transfer, the Prairie Lea company who controls the pipeline.
A short time later, a representative from the gas company responded and closed a valve shutting off the discharge while crews from the New Braunfels Fire Department stood by as a safety precaution.
William T. Glasscock of Energy Transfer said the noise stemmed from a pressure release valve that had malfunctioned causing the gas to be released for about 55 minutes. Because natural gas is lighter than air, it dissipated into the atmosphere and posed no immediate danger, he said.

We don't have to worry about that here. Most of us here in Callaway use individual propane tanks or use electric heating.

Well, I finally made it back to the Wurstfest this evening and there were a lot more folks this time, than there were on my first visit on opening day. While some folks hit the beer booths right away, I had to settle for a lemonade.

The Wurstfest hosts were called the Omas and Opas. (Grandma's and Grandpas). They wandered the grounds answering questions and posing for photos.

One popular snack was the Wurst-kabob, a skewer of five different kinds of grilled wurst.

I settled on the potato pancake plate, which included apple sauce and a grilled wurst. It seemed to have been one of the most popular dishes at the fest, as I had to wait in a long line at the booth, while two assistants prepared and four different cooks grilled. After getting my plate, I grabbed my lemonade and headed for Das Grosse Zelt (The Big Tent) where a band was just taking to the stage.

The band in the big tent was called Meixner Music. They were quite good and coaxed many a dance couple onto their feet in no time. While they did play a lot of traditional tunes and polkas, they put a jazzy sort of slant to them. The lead singer/performer did a Sachmo version of Hello Dolly in German, played a mean accordian, trumpet and bass trombone. His biggest undertaking was a solo tune on the Alpenhorn. (No, it wasn't the Ricola theme song.) The crowd ate it all up and literally drank it all in. And as they did, they became more raucous and appreciative, clapping their hands, stomping their feet and a few, even dancing on the table. As for me, I just sipped my lemonade and enjoyed the performance. I have to admit though, I was a little envious of the crowd of bier drinkers. Because sometimes, having a little buzz can make ordinary music sound great and great music, super. Well, after finishing my plate, I headed back into Das Kleine Zelt (The Little Tent) when an oompah band was playing more traditional music. After listening for a bit and watching the dancers merrily polka-ing along, I headed back for the parking lot and home. Goodbye Wurstfest, I'll see yuh next year.

My neighbor has a son who has a food concessions booth at the Wurstfest and he gave me a free ticket. Guess I will be heading back to the fest later this evening. It's closing night!
