SYNOPSIS:
In 1836, two prisoners, Hugh Allison and Son Holland (Kris Kristofferson, Scott Bairstow) escape from a Louisiana penal colony run by a vicious strong boss. In the process of the escape, the strong boss is killed which sets his brother, ex-warden Emile Landry (Victor Rivers) on a chase of the men. Along the way, the escapees meet up with Sana (Irene Bedard), an Indian prisoner of a tribe that is selling horses to Santa Anna's army. Though Bairstow is reluctant to take the squaw along with them to Texas, as his parents had been massacred by Indians, the youth eventually falls for the sympathetic Sana . Leaving Sana with some friendly Indians while they themselves get pursued to the very edge of Sam Houston's camp by ex-warden Landry, the two join up with Houston's army to fight the Mexicans. The ex-warden meanwhile joins up with Santa Anna to fight the Texians.
Hugh Allison meets up with his friend Jim Bowie (Peter Coyote) in Houston's camp and they discuss both the past and the future. As Texas is a land of new beginnings the two prison escapees, by serving with Houston for the duration of the war, are entitled to 640 acres of land. Son Holland hopes to get that land and then return to Sana, as he promised. Hugh Allison, on the other hand is content to merely stay ahead of their pursuers.
When Jim Bowie hears that Santa Anna is descending on San Antonio with an army of between 3,000 to 6,000 men, he determines to return there against Houston's request and assist Crockett and the 188 Texians who are determined to hold the Alamo mission. Bowie advises Allison and Holland to remain with Houston's army, which they do.
Later, when Deaf Smith rides into Houston's camp with a letter from the Alamo, Houston tell his men that they must think of Texas first and grow stronger, before meeting up with Santa Anna. He basicallly resigns the Alamo to its fate. Allison and Holland however, ride to the Alamo to help their friend Jim Bowie. When they arrive, buzzards are hanging over the smouldering ruins, bloodied corpses are everywhere and some Mexican townsfolk are throwing some of the bodies onto a funeral pyre. Allison and Holland find Susanna Dickinson (Karey Green) in shock, as she relates to them the grisly horrors of the battle. Allison finds Jim Bowie's body in the infirmary and takes his knife. Then the three, along with Susanna's infant daughter, ride back to Houston's camp.
Houston's army retreats to a place called San Jacinto where Allison, Holland and Deaf Smith on scouting duty, report that Santa Anna is encamped with his back to a marsh and with only a single bridge as a route of escape. Houston orders Allison and Holland to blow the bridge. Houston and his men catch Santa Anna's troops at siesta time and ruthlessly slaughter many of them to the cry of REMEMBER THE ALAMO! Allison and Holland meanwhile, head for the bridge, followed by the ex-warden. The bridge is blown and the fleeing Mexicans are slaughtered in the water. Santa Anna, dressed as a peasant, is captured and surrenders to Sam Houston.
With the war ended, Hugh Allison and Son Holland part company, Allison heading back up north to seek his fortune in Colorado and Holland, back to his sweetheart, Sana and 640 acres of rich Texas soil.
