For all interested parties, there's a VHS tape of VIVA MAX! currently listed on eBay with an opening bid of $9.99. This movie is becoming more and more scarce, as the years go by. Too bad it is not out on DVD yet!

I have never seen it. I read somewhere that the DRT wasn't too happy with the production and tried to get it shut down. Didn't Peter die recently>

If only for the novelty of having a sort of 'home movie' of the San Antonio of 1969. And the Alamo set itself (built in Rome, Italy on a soundstage) is really impressive. Only the Alamo exteriors were actually filmed in San Antonio where a fortified wooden gate was added to cover the wrought-iron convent yard gate. Yeah, the DRT was not too pleased when John Astin, as General Max's faithful sergeant, lowered the Lone Star flag from the church's pole and then replaced it with the Mexican tricolour. (For the first time since the actual fall of the place, in 1836!)

used to watch time tunnel as a youngster and being about the alamo, it was worth it to me, but i dont see me watching it over much. it does use clips from the last command for battle scenes. biggest thing i guess is just bein able to say you have it. still would like to get the {you are there} episode of the alamo. any one remember it or know how to get?

Jiminy Xmas! - Viva Max. I saw this when I was 11. I remember on the march to San Antonio the Mexican soldiers had to disguise themselves and one of the soldiers was wearing a Baylor sweatshirt. Ustinov, Jonathan Winters, and John Astin were the best.

Max (Peter Ustinov) draws the line. This set of the convent yard and back of the Long Barrack arcade was constructed upon a soundstage in Rome, Italy. (Notice how there is no grass,or shrubbery growing anywhere?) When I first saw "VIVA MAX" I'd assumed that everything was filmed on site at the real Alamo. The lack of shrubbery had me confused. My incorrect assumption was that there must've been some re-landscaping going on during the time of filming.

Finally got a copy of the "Time Tunnel" (1968) version of the Alamo and it is a hoot. The nicest thing about having it however, is that most of the scenes lifted from "Last Command" are outtakes, taken from different camera angles and perspectives. In "Time Tunnel" Jim Davis, from "Last Command": portrays a pretty good Jim Bowie. He even grimaces like Sterling Hayden.
