cool screne shot. are the mexicans the ones hold up in the fort? Alamoguy, you have never seen "VIVA MAX"? In it a Modern day Mexican General (Peter Ustinov) captures the Alamo to impress his girlfiend. His 100 'red blooded Mexican Soldiers' soon become surrounded by the San Antonio Police Department, the National Guard and a vigilante group called The Sentries. It is at this point that General Max decides to draw his own line.

Max and the boys retake the Alamo. why does the flag seem to be almost at half staff?

I wondered about that, too. Since the movie was released in 1969, could the film have been shot in 1968, back when Bobby Kennedy was murdered and so hence, the flag's at half-staff? Another guess is that the soldados are already beginning to run it down to be replaced by the Mexican tricolor. The truest answer is probably that Max and his troops were rushing to get to the Alamo because it was 5:00 PM, closing time. Here's a shot of Sargento (John Astin) with the Chief of Police. (Harry Morgan). They seem to be standing near the north transept door that leads to the giftsghop.

Here Max (Peter Ustinov) speaks with the Baylor University co-ed (Pamela Tiffen) about her allergy prescription. Ms. Tiffen has been locked in the sacristy as a hostage.

did they use the real sacristy for that scene and ust add the bars? Nope, all Alamo interiors, from the Long Barrack, to the chapel, to the courtyard were all filmed on a soundstage in Rome, Italy. The background San Antonio buildings were actually blown up photograph mattes. All of the San Antonio scenery, including Alamo Plaza, the Alamo facade (at a distance) are absolutely real. The DRT would not allow any photography within the chapel.

if the drt didnt let them film in the chapel, then why did they let them take down the flag and fly a mexican one? it seems that taking that flag down was worse then filming inside the chapel.

A little trick camera work and an amazing set. When Sargento (John Astin) is seen climbing the courtyard wall to take down the Texas flag, it is actually on the set in Rome. Even a portion of the church facade was built so that you could see it in the background. (It is close, but you can tell the difference between the set and the real Alamo wall, if you freeze frame the scene.)

The commanding generall (Keenan Wynn) prepares OPERATION MORNING AFTER, a plan to recapture the Alamo from Max and his soldados. They had a nice model of the modern-day Alamo in that scene. The National Guard scales the walls of the Long Barrack, in an attempt to recapture the Alamo from Max and his 100 soldados.

I only have a VHS copy of VIVA MAX. While there has been a bootleg DVD of it avaliable on eBay, I really think it deserves to be released legit. Can we do it in here? In here, we will not be disturbed.
