All I did on the diorama today is what I said I was going to do on it yesterday. I guess that the cannon ramp will just have to wait until tomorrow while I go and scout out some papier mache.

Nef, that composite balsa-whatever is really a good medium but somewhat messy. Very granular, but you can make adobe, stone, or wood very genuine looking. I’ve wanted to do a ‘North Wall’ diorama for years and even visited Tom Feely when he lived in Ridgewood Pk NJ to get some tips. At the time he just completed “Crockett’s Last Stand”. I’ve done a fair amount of research on soldato uniforms and still doing some. The one thing I was hung on for quite awhile was whether the sapper units wore the bearskin hats in the field. It seemed to me that they were, but several people assured me that was not the case. But, if I were to do an artillery scene, I would not have them in parade or at least with the fatigue hats. A re-enactor confirmed that shakos were somewhat cumbersome performing those duties.

I know I responded to alalamo's post earler today. Did it get deleted?
At any rate, welcome to the forum, Al and thanks for the info on diorama making. I hope that you complete your north wall one someday.

Today I spent 6 hours just timbering up the chapel battery cannon platform and ramp. I had no idea where the time went! I guess these old, swollen, arthritic fingers just can't do all the fine detail work they once did. (At least you won't find me complaining about my poor vision.)

alalamo, same as AlamoAl,
Nef, if it is possible, I would still like to see your reply. Are you doing this in HO or 1/32 scale?

alalamo, same as AlamoAl, Nef, if it is possible, I would still like to see your reply. Are you doing this in HO or 1/32 scale? 1/72nd scale. That's big enough! Though my baseboard is 6 x 4 1/2 feet, I'll probably end up cutting down the length by 14 inches, or so. I'm building the diorama based upon the 1955 Frederick Ray overview of the Alamo. Hence, there will be no latest and greatest examples of how the Alamo actually looked. This is the Alamo of my childhood and I just want to have fun with it. Today, I worked on the cattle pen---a paling fence and nothing more. Maybe after that's done, I will take some photos of the diorama as its progessed up to that point.

I'm going to be taking some 35mm photos during High Holy Days. I'll save a few shots at the end of the roll to take of the diorama in progress. I have no digital camera.

About what stage of the fight are you doing? Probably the same as the old diorama. The north and west walls have been breached and the 18 pounder has already been taken. The Texians will be fighting it out in the plaza and falling back into the Long Barrack. West wall. Old diorama, 1973
