D-Day

Another D-Day come and gone. I notice none of the networks had any films, or documentaries commemorating it. Doesn't surprise me. The local paper interviewed three local vets who took part in the invasion (paratroopers). I watched my Saving Private Ryan tape.

I've been watching my Gettysburg DVD the past day or so. I saw it on the big screen, then wore out a VHS version and now have the DVD, so I'm pretty familiar with the dialogue.
This viewing, though, I've read the subtitles, and whoever did subtitles for this DVD version committed major blunders left and right, which makes me wonder if the subtitle portions are done overseas or something.
For instance, when Chamberlain and Spear take swigs from the flask after their bayonet charge, a Yank soldier escorting prisoners stops and confesses his gun isn't loaded. Chamberlain quietly tells him, "Not so loud."
But the DVD subtitle has him saying, "That's allowed."
Huh?
Also, bits of the actual dialogue sometimes don't appear in the subtitles (probably cut out for space?), but this incorrect hearing of the actual spoken words totally sucks. And the film is riddled with them. I'm almost tempted to see if this happens in my other DVDs.
Anybody know anything about the subtitle-adding portion of the DVD-making process? Is it done here or abroad?

Boy, the place sure looked different, back in the day. I'd forgotten how shrub-laden the area was back then.
Makes one appreciate how open it is now, though I still wish that olive tree would go, along with the trees by the cenotaph.
Thanks for posting. Nice low-angle shot, too. Did you stretch out on the ground to frame it in your viewfinder, or does your camera have one of those twistable viewers?
Mine has the latter, for which my back and knees continue to say thanks.

Glad that you like them, Ted, and Rick. Here's a photo of the black powder salute from the dawn ceremony. I had to just sort of reach up over people's heads to take it, as I was in the back of the crowd. Black powder salute to all who fell in the battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836. This is an interesting angle. Looks like the 'Mo was behind you. I thought SALHA usually tries to keep that area clear for the Dawn ceremony, but then I've only witnessed it twice. An overflow crowd for the 175th . . . . .

Here they come! Great shots there, Ned! I like this one in particular -- zoomed in, didya? Is it just my imagination, or is SALHA using smaller cannons these days? I mean smaller in heft, not bore. For some reason, I keep thinking the gun at the palisade during the 2006 Dios y Libertad (the last one I saw) performances was larger. I remember John Potter telling me it was a four-pounder.

Well, the John Wayne movie got the ball rolling for me. While I was alive when Fess Parker starred as Davy Crockett, I wasn't old enough to grasp what the signifacence of it was. But with Wayne's film, I "got it". Ditto. In my case, being a native Texan helped. We had Texas history both in fourth grade and seventh grade social studies classes. The Alamo got its hooks into me years ago, and I've never regretted it.

I never met Rudy, but from everything I've heard, he was a fine man. Here are two photos I took of him at Alamo Village in October 2005.

Well, I'm a longtime fan of Schilo's Deli, particularly its split pea soup, homemade root beer and bratwurst. It has a good breakfast menu, too.
The only Riverwalk restaurant I've been to is an Italian place, Paesano's. Good chow, but noisier than sin.

Maybe the Director's Cut of G & G (which I eagerly await) will change my opinion of the film. I went from "Love it" to "Hate it" in about two viewings... Greg, I read your interview with Brian Mallon. Very interesting and well done. Thanks also for the heads-up on the upcoming release of Maxwell's DC version of Gods and Generals.

Say, did you know that Sandra Bullock once bit Frank Thompson? True story. Details, please.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons, though it's hard to believe it's winter right now, what with it hitting 72 yesterday and me running the car A/C this afternoon.

Widmark sure did like that particular hat, didn't he? Wonder how many films he wore it in . . .

Sweet Liberty and Revolution are two of my favorite Revolutionary War films, along with The Patriot. Wish more films depicting this era (like some of the Kenneth Roberts books) would be made.
I've seen a few TV movies depicting the era, but not enough reenactors or CGI work to make them look authentic enough.
I've got the George Washington miniseries on tape. Thought Barry Bostwick made a good G.W. Also saw TV version of Howard Fast's April Morning. It could've been better.
Also saw one where Jeff Daniels played Washington and another where Kelsey Grammer played G.W. and Aiden Quinn played Benedict Arnold.

I watched the Games off and on. A few thoughts:
-- I'm sick to death of beach volleyball.
-- Nothing against Michael Phelps, but I'm tired of him, too.
-- NBC's orgasmic coverage is beginning to rival ABC's.
-- Thank goodness we had -- finally -- a Couric-free Games.
-- I've rooted against the USA mens' basketball team ever since we started sending NBA guys to the Games.
-- Just once, I'd like to see an Olympic track event winner NOT do the flag-wrap thing.
-- At least Germany's female swimmers don't have facial hair or deep voices anymore.
