The TV series, YOU ARE THERE visited different events in American history as seen through the eyes of TV news anchorman, Walter Cronkite and his two 'on the scene' reporters, Bob Shiffer and Douglas Edwards. This October 9, 1971 episode features the siege of the Alamo and is treated as a breaking news event. It is March 5, 1836 and things do not bode well for the Alamo. Travis (Roger Davis) explains the Alamo's situation to the newsmen, while Crockett (The Munsters' Fred Gwynne) tries to keep up the mens spirits. Being unbiased, as all new reporters are there is also a visit to Santa Anna's headquarters. Back in the Alamo, Travis ultimately gives his speech and then draws his famous line---inside Jim Bowie's room, so that Bowie can hear him. In this version, Moses Rose is not derided for not crossing the line; his decision is respected by the other Alamo defenders. Soon thereafter, the deguello sounds---the real deguello is finally used in an Alamo production---and the defenders rush to the walls to the sound of gunfire. This is all covered in 21 minutes of film in order to fit the show's 30 minute time slot.

This looks like the constitutional convention, with some dandified delegates. (I wonder why that guy at the pump is making a face. Did he think he'd happened upon Beekeeper's still?)

The deguello is sounded and the defenders rush to their posts. (Douglas Edwards had better skeddaddle, if he does not want his name to appear on the cenotaph.)

That´s an interesting concept, visiting historical sites and situations as if it occured right now. They should issue that series on dvd...
