Here's a photo of the working model of the LAST COMMAND SET. That's all she wrote, folks. (Well, at least they did not move the church up.)

didnt they use matte effects for the rest of the compound? Yes, and the interiors were shot on a sound stage. Here's Mike The Bull (Ernest Borgnine) making his last stand.

In this behind the scenes shot from LAST COMMAND, the Texians are shown preparing the Alamo defenses. Bowie (Sterling Hayden) and Crockett (Arthur Hunnicutt) can be seen standing behind the low wall. In the background, women, children and even some goats, are seen rushing inside. (Note the film production spot-lights over by the west wall and to the right.)

The Alamo movie that never was. A mock-up poster for Republic's proposed production of THE ALAMO, designed before Wayne walked. While Wayne took the title with him, Yates kept Jimmy Grant's original script, reworked it a little, then went on to produce LAST COMMAND.

(Kind of looks like Yvonne DeCarlo) Actually it looks like a way younger JW, prehaps from one of his early westerns?

More behind the scenes shots from LAST COMMAND. Setting up for the final assault. Travis draws the line. Garden hoses were used to create the rainstorm over the Alamo. Looks like a big scene is being shot, over by the palisade. What do you suppose it is?

I guess director Frank Lloyd thought that rain would give the scene more atmosphere.
That's funny. In ALAMO, THE PRICE OF FREEDOM, it actually rained for several days, so Keith Merrill finally decided to just write it into the script and kept filming.

Especially during the scene where the Mexican army is entering Bexar. Right after Merrill yelled "CUT" it started to pour buckets of rain, high wind and plenty of lightning. Travis, Bowie, Crockett and Mike the Bull, watch Santa Anna's troops arrive in San Antonio. You know what I notice about this photo? It's supposed to be up on the south wall. So, what are all those Texians doing in the background? The wall isn't that wide. Do you suppose that LAST COMMAND had its own ' false wall', like the Waynamo does?
