Tim Burton's 1985 cult classic has become a....well, cult classic to Alamo fans for its bizarre plotline. Seems that Pee Wee Herman's beloved bicycle has been stolen and through the means of a fortune teller, Pee Wee discovers that the absconced bike is hidden in the basement of the Alamo. So begins Pee Wee's cross country quest for the recovery of the bike.
Arriving in Texas hidden in the freight car of a train, Pee Wee is soon led to his goal by means of a sign.
Pee Wee makes a dash for the Alamo. (Filmed on Alamo Plaza.)
He is just in time for the Alamo tour.
Alamo tour guide Tina greets everyone.
Tina gives a brief history of the Alamo as a mission and mentions how it had been built on top of an old Indian burial mound.
Tina greets the Hispanic visitors to the Alamo with a "Buenos Dias", while Pee Wee looks on, perturbed.
Alamo tour guide Tina informs the crowd how a staple of the mission was corn and goes on to explain in detail how tortillas are made.
Outside the giftshop, Tina concludes the tour and then asks if there are any questions. Pee Wee responds, "When are we going to see the basement?"
"There's no basement at the Alamo", Tina tells him, bursting into laughter, along with the crowd of tourists. (NOTE: All Alamo interiors and exteriors, save for the opening shot on Alamo Plaza, were actually filmed at the San Fernando Mission, in California.)
Later on, when Pee Wee is thrown from a bucking bronco while riding in a rodeo, a man in the crowd gathered around him asks, "What's your name, Son?" "I don't remember," Pee Wee replies, dazed. "Where are you from?" another man inquires. "I don't remember," is Pee Wee's response. "Can't you remember anything?" the man asks in concern. "I remember...the Alamo," Pee Wee returns. The crowd goes wild.
That's the total Alamo connection in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. While short on screen time, it is a hoot, each and every time I watch it.
