Actor Don Adams, best known for his role as Secret Agent Maxwell Smart, passed away over the weekend at the age of 82...
Loosen up, Max. There are worse fates than being tied up together with
99!
GET SMART... one of my favorite shows of the mid-Sixties,
it parodied the popular James Bond films of the time. With Don Adams as
Agent Maxwell Smart and Barbara Feldon as his sultry partner, Agent
99 of C.O.N.T.R.O.L. they did constant battle with the siniter
K.A.O.S. crime organization to prevent its domination of the
world.
Sight gags, like Max's shoe phone, the 'cone of silence' and that
endless corridor Max had to pass through to get into
C.O.N.T.R.O.L. headquarters remain as fond memories for me
and countless other baby boomers. (And I have to admit, I kind of
had this thing for Barbara Feldon.)
Prior to GET SMART, Don Adams did the voice over for a Saturday
Morning cartoon character called Tennessee Tuxedo, a penguin who
shared his adventures with his sidekick Chumley, a Walrus. Adams
next appeared as the bumbling Hotel Detective on the BILL DANA SHOW.
It is here that he developed his famous"Would you believe...?" line and
much of the Smart persona.
After GET SMART folded, Adams continued on television as host of the
DON ADAMS SCREEN TEST, in which would-be actor/contestants would
be asked to recreate a famous scene, line for line, from a
popular Hollywood film. With Adam's wisecracks to pave the way, the show
was hilarious! (I wonder why no one has thought to revive the
show's premise? It would certainly beat the hell out of 99% of of these
so called 'reality' shows. Ah, but then they would not have
Adams.)
Farewll, Don. And say 'hello' to Chief Ed Platt, in that big headquarters
in the sky...
