William Barret Travis, one hell of a man no matter what some people might say! Are there artifacts of his around like, clothes, swords, guns, boots, etc? There is that famous ring of course, documents and letters as well! There too have been paintings of him,but i understand there was a sketch that most resembles him of which i have seen! One wonders if there ever was a painting of which he posed for?,an actual likeness that is! ;D TED....aka....cole_blooded

TED....aka....cole_blooded The 2nd illustration was painted by Henry McArdle in the 1890's as a study for his massive "Dawn At The Alamo" canvas. It was supposed to have been based upon the Martin sketch, as well as a photograph of Travis' son, Charlie Travis. If anyone knows where I can locate the photo, I will try to post it.

About a year ago, my mom accidentally tossed-out an article about a Travis portrait... Now, this is 2nd-hand info, so take it with a grain of salt... She said he sat for the portrait, but was not happy with it... He was dressed informally, in a white collar shirt... Or she said, maybe even a buckskin jacket with it...?
Does anyone know of this painting, which is supposed to be in possession of his family?
By age 19 or 20, Travis was 175 lbs. and about 5'9" tall ("Three Roads to the Alamo")

William Barrett Travis, by Gary Zaboly. (Notice Joe on the north wall, wearing a top hat.)

Good Zaboly artwork as usual, but that portrait of Travis also resembles a younger Clint Eastwood with sideburns a bit! Just a little observation by me! TED COLE....aka....Cole_blooded

TRAVIS' CATSEYE RING, CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY AT THE ALAMO As the story goes, on, or around the night of March 5, 1836, Colonel William Barret Travis paid a visit to Suzannah Dickinson and her infant daughter Angelina in the Alamo chapel. Travis had a gift for Angelina; a battered catseye ring that his Texas sweetheart Rebecca Cummings had given him as a love token. Possibly sensing his pending doom, Travis is said to have strung the ring on a piece of thread and then placed it around Angelina's neck. The ring and the story have both survived the years. The story is part of the Alamo's romantic legend, while the ring is currently on dispay inside of the Alamo itself. Only two Alamo films have chosen to reenact this tender scene: ALAMO, THE PRICE OF FREEDOM and 13 DAYS TO GLORY. In the above photo from PRICE OF FREEDOM, Travis (Casey Biggs) tells Mrs. Dickinson, concerning the ring, "I want her to have this; I don't think I'll be needing it any longer." In 13 DAYS, the scene is played out very beautifully by Alec Baldwin and Kathleen York---without any dialogue whatsoever. Travis (Baldwin) merely enters the room and then loops the ring around baby Angelina's neck, while Mrs. Dickinson (York) looks on in wonder. As it ends up the scene was an impromptu one that was suggested by Alamo Society member Tony Pasqua, an extra on 13 DAYS. Pascua just sort of mentioned it to Baldwin who liked the idea and completed the touching scene in one take. (Can you get this 13 DAYS scene as a screen capture, Bromhead?

Travis seems to have recovered from his head wound sufficiently enough to write a dispatch in this early 50's magazine ad for the Gilbert Paper Company.

By the looks of the fighting in the background, he's a little late in his request for reenforcements...

This painting of Travis' final moments was painted back in the 1930's and used to hang inside the Alamo chapel. Travis has just been shot in the head and General Mora is seeking to finish him off. Just beneath Travis' saber is Joe, holding a pistol.
