COCHRAN, ROBERT E. (1810-1836). Robert E. Cochran, Alamo defender, was born in New Jersey in 1810. He probably lived in Boston and then in New Orleans before immigrating to Texas in 1835. For a time he conducted business with Ammon Underwood. Cochran took part in the siege of Bexarqv and later served in the Alamo garrison as a member of Capt. William R. Carey's artillery company. He died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Cochran County is named in his honor.

When writing about the Alamo, Capt Jose Juan Sanches Navarro says "Some cruelties horrified me, among them the death of an oldster they called Cocran."
Was he actually talking about Robert E. Cochran? Some speculate that Navarro's command of English may've changed "Crockett" to "Cocran". While this may be considered a stretch of the imagination, Cochran himself certainly was no "oldster", being only 26 at the time of his death. Could the furor of battle have changed his visage into that of an old man?

I am a descendant of Robert E. Cochran (1810-1836) who defended the Alamo. I have seen several places, including this site, where he has been listed as being born in New Jersey. THIS IS INCORRECT! He was born in Pembroke, Merrimack, New Hampshire to his parents, Samuel Martin Cochran and Sallie Folsom Cochran. I hope you will correct this inaccuracy for the next person looking for information about him.
Thank you!
