The Religous Education office that i work at is part of Holy Family Parish and Catholic School. They have two hockeys teams. One in Division 1 which is made of of kids in grades 1-4. The other is Division 2 which is made of kids in grades 5-8. Well, after weeks of looking for a new coach, they decided to name me coach of their division 1 hockey team! I couldn't believe it when I got the call because there were so many adults that wanted the job and they chose a fifteen year old! I was given the list of players that were to be on my team today and I have to call them and tell them their schedules. There are three practices starting in August and there are six games starting in mid september. I'm already getting to work on my strategies. I'm so happy right now!

Good for you, Greg. It will be a fine learning experience for you. (But watch out for those soccer parents!)

Good for you, Greg. It will be a fine learning experience for you. (But watch out for those soccer parents!) It will be a lot of work because as you try to get your team to win, you also have to teach some of these kids how to play the right way and some of them have never even picked up a hockey stick before. It will be a hard work but no championship was ever won easily...

Great pic, Greg! There´s two players in orange in the center, but I guess it´s you who´s running. Can we have one in close-up too?

I'm the one closest to the bottom of the pic. as for a closer view, this is as close as we can get because I have a helmet/facegaurd on and because the seats in the rink are far away. this is actually the best pic of me playing for the Monmouth Eagles.

There was one time when I wound up for a slapshot and in order to blcok the shot, the opposing player dove face first in front of me. Thinking I could shoot above him I unleashed the hardest slapshot I could possible shoot and it hit him right in the jaw. Keep in mind that a full face shield is optional so he was only protected in the area above his nose. The shot broke his jaw. Not feeling good about what happened I went to visit him in the hospital. I apologized to him and he cursed me off still thinking I did it intentionally. So I walked out. I tried to say I was sorry and that was what I got.
Other time, a game went to three overtimes after the game had ended becuase in a playoff game, there can be no tie. After playing a full game and then three extra periods (almost like two games in one) everyone was so tired and I could barely skate. So with just over two minutes to go in the third overtime, I was so tired that I didnt couldnt even skate into the opposing zone so I shot the puck off the boards so i could go for a line change. The puck hit the glass behind the goalie and bounced off the goalie's back and went in the net! I didnt even see it as I was heading to the bench. What a game that was...
You might think that bench-clearing brawls only happen in the NHL but they even happen in a heated game between teens. I had my face to the glass and play was moving on and I was checked from behind send my face into the boards. I got up and ppunched the guy in the face and he punched back. Then two other players got into a fight and then the benched emptied. Fights were going on all over the rink and the coaches were even getting into a screaming match. The parent started yelling at each other and some even started throwing punches. The fights finally ended after a forty five minute delay. I got a five minute major for fighting, two minute minor for instigating, ten minute major for instigating, two minute minor for roughing, and becuase i cursed at one of the screaming parents i got another two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. That was about half the penalty minutes some of my teamates got as they got into more then one fight.
whew...

Wow! That´s some stories! Too bad the guy with the broken jaw did´nt believe you, but that´s his problem. You did the right thing and said you were sorry for the accident! I like your indirect goal when you hit the glass first.. What a brawl! Amazing that the parents don´t have more selfcontrol. They aint exactly good role models..

Aside from that game with the brawl, most of the time the only fights are the parents going at it. They get WAY too involved. There was a story in the news here a while ago about parents getting into a fight at a Hockey game which resulted in the death of one of the parents. Thank God that hasn't happened in my league.

Well, after two practices I can say its gonna be a long season. These kids are so small, i guess i never reallized how big a 4th grader could be. anyways, my goalie and one forward are the only bright spots to the team. im really gonna need to whip them into shape for the next and final practice.

Facing a bit of a dillema after only two games. Half the players want to play and dont know how, the other half doesnt care and doesnt know how. Im the hockey expert but these kids cant get help from two practices and a fifteen minute warmup before each game, they need God's help. With four games to go, I'm hoping to pull something good out of what has been a disastrous start to the season. The only good thing is that we have a good defense, but if you cant score, it dont matter how many goals you give up. (Both losses have been 2-0)

Only one game left. The way the standings are, I'm not sure that we would make the chamionship even if we win.
