Why not buy a cheap multiregion DVD player that plays both PAL and NTSC? I did that and it works just fine. No more trouble with PAL/NTSC and regions! I have one already but they are unable to record a NTSC signal they can only play it through the TV.

Have you tried to burn the laser disc Director's Cut of THE ALAMO onto DVD, Alex? Laser discs do not seem to have copyright protection. Frankly, I don't see why UA doesn't just transfer the WAYNAMO laser disc onto DVD officially. Nef I totally agree with you regarding UA transferring the LD to DVD as it's an excellent copy in fact they could borrow mine. The problem I have regarding transferring it to DVD (I have tried) is that it's a NTSC copy an although my TV will play it OK my DVD recorder will only record PAL (Not copyrighted that is LD) I also have the directors cut of Gettysburg on LD same problem!

You need to be aware if your videos are purchased films they usually have some sort of copywrite protection that prevents them from being copied. I have tried unsuccessfully to transfer some of the ones that I own that cannot be replaced with DVDs of the same title. I still have a video recorder but I am not prepared to buy any more videos I would rather have DVDs now. I see! You can get around copywrite protection on DVD´s, but on purchased Videos it´s probably going to be a problem. Luckily, most of my Videos are taped from TV. I too, prefer dvd´s and try to avoid buying Videos. I only buy Videos if that´s the only option and that´s very rare. Unfortunately, some movies are only available on Video. The directors cut of The Alamo (1960) and Iron Mistress fx., but if they´re not copywrite protected you could transfer them to DVD... The Alamo (1960) version copied from video tape to DVD OK and you should have no problem with the ones you copied from the television. I still have my laser disc player operational where I can play the full version of The Alamo (1960) I just wish they had been able to make a decent copy of it on DVD. I have quite a few American video tapes of Civil War sites etc the problem with converting NTSC to our PAL the quality is not very good.

Only $50 for a DVD recorder? Wow - that´s cheap! Here it´s $200-350 for one without any hard disk! Sooner or later I´ll have to buy one so I can transfer my favourite videos to DVD, but I too will always keep a video player around because transferring hundreds of video tapes onto DVD will be too much a job... You need to be aware if your videos are purchased films they usually have some sort of copywrite protection that prevents them from being copied. Do they not produce it on DVD as I have gotten rid of my video players?

I'm still kind of confused. Did you film it off of the theater screen? If not, where did the film come from for you to edit down? I set my camera up on a tripod in front of the television when the Alamo was playing then focused only onto the screen the result although not perfect was quite acceptable. I did try using the cine camera in the cinema but it didn't work as well as in front of the TV!

Coool, Alex! How long did your version of the film run? Nef I copied the arrival of Davy Crockett at the begining, then him and his Tennesseans going up and into the Alamo, the first battle scene and of course the final battle. I was quite pleased with my efforts although the quality wasn't anywhere close to todays LD and DVD standards it enabled me to watch it whenever I wanted to.

Greg, long before DVDs, Laser Discs, or VHS tapes, if a person wanted to own a film for home viewing, they could always go to their local film shop and buy an 8mm, or 16mm version of their favorite movie for a moderate price. Only thing was, they would have to settle for a silent version of the film, or else an edited down, twenty minute version. It was better than nothing. I bought an 8mm cine camera (Bell & Howell) and made my own edited Alamo copy long before it was available to buy. I even edited the soundtrack to run with it, at the time it was certainly the best option available, I still keep the copy for sentimental reasons.

Yeah, laser disc players can be bought for a song off eBay. (It'll probably cost you more in shipping charges than the actual price of the player.) Laser discs provide a clearer picture than the cheaper made CD format and are for the connoisseur viewer. I guess one of the reasons that the format never really took off, is that the discs themselves were so expensive, to begin with. On average, you'd expect to pay probably $30.00 for a single movie. Too, they are the size of an LP record and most folks would rather just conserve space in their homes. Today, you can buy a new laser disc for around $5.00. That's considerably less than the cost of a DVD of the same film. (That's why I bought three W.C. Fields laser discs at the same time. I'm not that rich to be throwing money around like that. ) THE OLD FASHIONED WAY... Is that the one with Baby LeRoy and the mashed potatoes? I totally agree with your sentiments regarding laser disc quality it's excellent, fortunately my laserdisc player is still wiorking excellently I did buy a couple of players off ebay as backups but both arrived damaged, apparently they don't travel very well and the motor which opens the disc tray gets damaged. Regarding the cost of laserdiscs when they first came out I paid over $200 for the boxed editors cut of "Gettysburg" and about $100 for the directors cut of JWs The Alamo which I have recently been transferring to DVD.

It's a good film watched it several times myself. Saw it once, loved it, now I want to buy it. Bruno Ganz wasnt an actor in the movie, he WAS Hitler. Scary... Yes he played an excellent part could be mistaken for Hitler's twin brother

I just watched The Downfall (Der Untergang) again last night. It´s the best film about the last days of Hitler, I´ve ever seen. It´s based on the memoirs of Hitlers secretary, Traudl Junge, and on a famous Hitler biography by Joachim Fest. If you´re into that part of history, don´t miss it! It's a good film watched it several times myself.

Just finished watching for the first time believe it or not "Sweet Home Alabama" I recognised most of the places in the film as I have visited them in Georgia. I enjoyed the film.
