Back in 1975, James Brolin, Margo Kidder and Rod Steiger starred in the film version of the supposedly true story of a house possessed, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. While I enjoyed the novel, the movie fell decidedly short of my expectations. It almost seemed as though the movie-makers were trying to debunk all of the strange happenings at the Amityville New York house as but figments in the imagination of George and Judy Lutz, the house's owners. Spring ahead to 2005 and there's a brand new version of AMITYVILLE HORROR soon to hit the theaters. I will be keeping my eye on it. Has anyone here seen and enjoyed the first film version and will you be going to the next?

Has anyone seen this yet? It's been getting some pretty poor reviews. (But then again, so did THE ALAMO.)

That movie was filmed in Toms River & Point Pleasant NJ. I was living in TR at the time it was made. I know the house they filmed the first 3 AHs, which is now demolished, because of too many people driving by.
I read the novel long before the movie was even though of, and believed the story. However, the story was pretty much debunked later on. The authors and owners of the house, created the story to sell the book, which eventually got them out of the deep debt he put them in in buying a home he couldn't afford. And yes, he may even have taken his brother's wedding money. Kind of bizarre to blame that one on spooks.

Interesting, Al. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I too wondered what the spirit of the house would want with $1,500 cash. Makes sense.
You say the house is demolished? Was it a real house, modified to look like the Lutz's dwelling, or merely a set? What of the original Lutz house? Do you know if that's still standing?

The house in TR was a dutch colonial just like the AV house and sits on the TR at the same angle. The house (the Peterson's) also had a boat house in the approximate location of the AV. They did some mods to the house to make it closer in appearance. The AV house sat on more of a main thruway, where the Peterson house is more out-of-way.
I remember when they were casting for extras and a friend of mine bellied up to the bar. His reply to the question "have you any previuos acting experience?" was "Well, some. I was in a street scene of 'In Cold Blood'", which was partly filmed in Emporia Kansas where he was going to college. He happened to be on the street, when the film crew passed him by, filming a spot where the two main actors driving down the street. Robert Blake, now infamous, is originally from Nutley NJ, and his real name is Michael Gubitosi. His family were a gypsy like bunch of street entertainers that moved to Hollywood hoping to be discovered. Michael caught on with the MGM "Our Gang" series, which I think, were not nearly as good as the Hal Roach originals.
The real Lutz house still stands to my knowledge and the present owners insist that there are no ghosts or demons. Hmmmmm!
Davy. Where do you live? I currently live in Flanders, which is in western Morris cnty, up in 'the hills'.

Joe Peccatiello. He's not listed on the 'official' staff, but is no less one of the coaches. He's very active on our Rutgers board. I've been to the Champ game held at RU a few years ago against Carteret. I was very impressed with the level of play by the Rockets.
