WESTERN STARS LAUDED Sam Elliott has been inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers. He was honored at the 46th Annual Western Heritage Awards on Saturday. A sellout crowd of more than 1200 attended the event at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Veteran Stuntman Dean Smith received the Board of Directors' Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been a stunt-double for Roy Rogers, Dale Robertson, Ben Johnson, Robert Redford, Robert Duvall and Steve Martin, among others. "What a great night you've made for this old cowboy. I'm glad to be included in this museum with all my heroes," Smith said. "I want to thank everyone who's helped me. I've spent a lifetime playing cowboys and Indians, competing in rodeos and making Western Movies." Also inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers was Steve McQueen, who died in 1980 at the age of 50. McQueen starred in Western films including THE MAGNIFACENT SEVEN, JUNIOR BONNER, NEVADA SMITH and TOM HORN. He also starred as bounty hunter Josh Randall in the popular 1950s TV series, WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE. Elliott, 62, served as Master of Ceremonies.

Ned, is that shot of Sam Elliott one you took, shot by the official still photographer or taken by one of your fellow extras?

Ned, is that shot of Sam Elliott one you took, shot by the official still photographer or taken by one of your fellow extras? It is one that I took by the Mexican barricade. I walked up to "General Houston" who was crouching in the tall grass resting and said, "Mr. Elliott, would it be all right if I took your photo?" "Proud to, " he replied, beginning to rise to his feet. "No, just stay where you are, I said, "It's a great pose." And so it was.

I very much like watching Sam Elliot in any movie he is in. What I don't get is that he was born in Sacremento, CA, but he has a southwestern accent in almost all fims I've seen him in, including the non-westerns and his voice-over work. He was in BC&TSK in 1969, so was his accent acquired for the westerns and he just decided to keep it, or what? This reminds me of Mel Gibson, who after spending his late childhood and early adulthood in Australia, spoke with such an accent until he decided to live in the U.S. Now, he speaks with an American accent.

A lot of people from Sacramento in his generation sound kind of like that. He might lay it on a bit. My family's been there a long time. People from Rio Linda has a more pronounced "southern" sounding accent than Sacramento. A Rio Linda accent is easy to pick out if you've spent much time in the valley
