My late father, Leland M. Huthmacher (he passed away just last year) was stationed in the Pacific theater in WWII and spent some time in Hawaii, as well. He was a T-Srgnt. in radar and missed being killed during an air raid when a bomb landed in a machine gun position just 15 feet in front of the 'hidden radar'. While all the soldiers in the machine gun nest perished, the radar and its crew---the bomber's target---survived.
A printer by trade, my Dad also worked on the "Stars And Stripes' newspaper, along with the fellow who'd originated the "Superman" comic strip. They had a running feature in the paper called "Super GI".
When my Dad and Mom went on a trip to Hawaii in 1989, the pineapple field where his radar position had once stood was still there, looking eerily unchanged. Must've given him one of those unexplainable 'veteran' moments.

my grand father Robert Bishop Cole faught in WW1he was in the 36th infantry.signed his papers in Zephyr Texas!he had fought in the Saint Mihiel battle, that battle was started by a four hour barrage of one million rounds of artillery fire from all sides involved!,just try and imagine one million rounds of artillery going off in just four hours.my grandad was a good pistol shot being a farmer and all and knew his weapons well!while in a trench one time a German plane was strafing low and my grandad and some of his buddies tried shooting at it,my Grandad always thought his pistol shot had brung the plane down!he also was in a gas attack also and had inhaled a small amount, and shrapnel in the face to boot! his second campaign was the Argonne forrest.he had mentioned i am told he lost several buddies he met to the 1918 Flu epidemic!Robert was born in 1895, and died in 1959 from the long effects of the gas,he died a young man considering his brothers and sisters all lived into their 80s and 90s! in WW2 i had three uncles serve in the war!Randall,David and Pete! Pete worked most of the War at a base near Dallas Ft. Worth working on planes going and returning from Europe!plane mechanic,fixer-upper and what ever else,he was good at his work! Randall was a top turrent gunner on a B-17.on one mission his plane was shot to hell by enemy Flak and just him and his tail gunner managed to parachute out!they lande about 200 ft. across. randall was partially hidden by some bushes ,meanwhile his buddy was discovered by some German farmers and pitch forked to death where he sat!,my uncle Randall witnessed this and a little while later some other German men found uncle Randall and were about to kill him when a German officer and his men intervened and saved him from death ,but to only end up being a POW in a German Gulag!when Randall and the other men were rescued by Pattons tanks, the troops in the tanks begin throwing what little food they had to the slim fellas they rescued.well Randall caught a one pound block of Buuter and ate the whole thing and paid the price later!Randall still has a POW liscense plate on his truck! David was a door gunner on a B-17,and was in 35 missions!he has a group of photos also of his crewmates!in England and a few in combat!his pilot Roy Fisher recently wrote a book about his crew, his wife, and learning to fly as a 21 year old officer!the book is called "the Lucky Bastard Club"by Roy Fisher and his daughter! sorry about this post being a little long, but i was asked! I was the first in my family to join the active military since the Civil War, which we had Great X3 grand fathers fight on both sides. I have a confederate officers infantry sword from one G,G,G,Grandfather and a union officers lapel button from the other.
It's rather cool to have those origional family artifacts.

Grandpa served in France, but he came too late to see any action. My great-uncle Jack, though, served in Italy, and I'm fairly certain he saw some. My grandpa is still alive, but my great-uncle Jack is dead now.
My first post, yay! ;D

My Grandfather served aboard the U.S.S. McKean (APD-5) during the Solomons Campaign, dropping off Marine Raiders up and down the Solomons. He was also at Midway, Leyte Gulf and Okinawa, where the DE he was on was hit by a kamikaze. He's in Arlington National Cemetery now. I miss him like you can't believe.
Respectfully Submitted, Duane
