I'd have to say John "Pappy" Ford. He practically invented the John Wayne character that we have come to know and love.

I went with Hawks because El Dorado is my favorite Wayne movie. I love Ford but Hawks had a very good way with the Duke.

Since Hawks worked on RIO BRAVO just the year before, how do you think he would've handled THE ALAMO?

I think Wayne was the only person that could direct The Alamo. Wayne had invested so much and I think it should have been done exactly how he wanted it. From the script to the camera angle. The only way to achieve that is to direct/produce a film yourself.
