It looks like it´s the same spot you photographed today! - Lot´s of people at the Alamo today! Do the locals use the Alamo grounds as a kinda recreational area, or is it only the tourists who go there?

Do the locals use the Alamo grounds as a kinda recreational area, or is it only the tourists who go there? As I think I mentioned on the LOW HOLY DAYS thread, the Houston Street Fair was going on at the same time as the SALHA reenactment. Hence Alamo Plaza was filled with people attending both events. I have never seen anything like it before. People were lined up about 1/2 a block just to get inside the Alamo church. I took that photo behind the church just to show how crowded the grounds were this morning. As for the street fair, there were booths all along Houston Street and Alamo Plaza, chuck full of handmades good for sale, along with food and drink. To add to the confusion---and congestion---the police had the plaza completely closed to auto traffic.

The Alamo, in the late 1990's, rugged, craggy and weathered.

(Photo by Wade Dillon)The Alamo today, with its new Pink Hump. It has finally gotten to the point where the Alamo is beginning to look like a replica of itself.

I much preferred the weathered and aged look. I don't know how the restorers got away with doing what they have done, over here in England any old buildings are very sensitively restored.

How often do they clean the facade?

How often do they clean the facade? Probably as needed. But the last major overhaul and weather proofing was done in 2000 and included the pinking of the hump.

Is it possible to determine the 1836 facade from the 1850 additions?

The "Woodmen of The World" pose for a photo in front of the Alamo doors around the turn of the 20th Century. According to Chaska, those doors might be the original U.S. Army doors installed around 1850. Question: Who the hell were the Woodmen of the World and why would they be having their photo taken in front of the Alamo? Were they holding some sort of convention in San Antonio, do you think? Today, San Antonio remains a popular convention destination. (Say, doesn't that woodmen in the front row, far left, look like Ward Bond?)
