A new and controversial issue has arisen in the state of New Jersey. This is only happening in one high school thus far in the state, but I have no doubt other schools may follow. I remain a bit indifferent on the subject because there are both positives and negatives for the issue. Details of the issue are listed below:
A unnamed High School in New Jersey has decided to add an item to the senior prom gift bag. Along with the customary disposable camera, picture frames and other little trinkets, this high school is now going to add two condoms to the bag. This has caused outrage among parents (not so much from students) and I wasn't aware of how heated this issue was until I heard the "Jersey Guys" on NJ101.5 talking about it this afternoon.
What's your take on the situation? There are positives and negatives to the situation, both with the school system losing. The positives: Students on their prom night are more then likely gonna "do it" and with the condoms added to the gift bag, it will promote safe sex and create a sense of responsibility among students. The negatives: this promotes unneccesary sex and may leave the impression that all students have to do it that night in order to impress their friends.
My take is, give them out, and since the parents know about it, then tell their kids that their gonna count the condoms when they get home from the prom. That may solve everything but I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
