The first time I saw it, I was clueless. I hated it. The second time, I grew to like it. The third time I bought the movie on DVD and absolutely love it! Yes, you need patience for some parts of it but it truly is a work of art, mainly because of the music. I will never understand the entire movie (like the monolith, space child, etc) but it truly is one of the best films of all time. Comments?

I saw the film when it first came out in 1968 and enjoyed the extent of the space technology displayed. I also enjoyed the confrontation between Dave and HAL, the computer. It was all pretty high tech, for 1968 and yet holds up pretty well, even by today's standards. Of course, today, the title just kills it and makes it seem less creditable. (Perhaps Stanley Kubrick should have called it 2050, a Space Odyssey to give NASA a little more breathing room in which to achieve the goals set in 2001.
I disliked and never really quite understood the idea of the "Space Baby". I guess I'd wanted a concrete, plausible discovery and ended up instead with some sort of artsy-fartsy, quasi-spirutual explanation that fell to earth like a lead balloon with most viewing audiences. Still, the quality of the rest of the picture more than made up for the non-ending.
I even got the tie-in paperback novel for 2001 by Arthur C. Clarke and yet still came away knowing less about the "Space Baby" than ever. But the novel has a photo section with clips from the film that is still a lot of fun. It's A SIGNET BOOK, Q3580, First Printing , July 1968, if you're interested in trying your luck on an eBay search, or perhaps, Amazon.

I always thought reading the book would give a clearer explanation so maybe I will try to get a copy. As for the Space baby, I read that when Dullea lands on Jupiter and is in that room, the monolith represents a life journey and the space baby means he got reborn.

That is the only movie that i know of that doesn't use sound effects for the space ships and EVA's. There is no sound in space...

Just watched "2010: The Year we make contact", which is the sequel to "2001". Another excellant film and it definately answers some questions left open in the first film. The final scene is memorable as well. I just hope they make "2061: An Odyssey three" into a movie.
As of right now, I'm searching all over the internet trying to find a set of all four Odyssey books. But it seems none exists and I'll have to buy them individually...

Well, if they do make the third film, you can almost bet that they will make a trilogy DVD set out of it.

Well, until Bromhead can get 2001: A Space Odyssey At The Bijou, this photo section from the 1968 novelization of the film will just have to do. Enjoy!
