Hey Greg, Maybe we should start a "Boring food thread" and move these posts there. ;D

I think that it would be difficult to cut and paste all these food posts onto a new topic thread. Henceforth, whenever we see a posting under TRADIN' POST just imagine that it is about food. Doesn't have to be exactly 'boring', either. One man's meat is another man's poison, I imagine.
(Anyhow, Tradin' Posts sell lots of grub, don't they? Pemmican, or Elk jerky, anyone?

Good one Ned! have you got any nice sausage recipes? Naw! I'm not that creative in the culinary department. I will certainly look for some interesting sausage recipes though, once I get back home to "Sausage Town". By the way, have you ever tried Mexican chorizo sausage? They make it with most any kind of meat, lots of red chili and spices. It's usually served crumbled with scrambled eggs, or potatoes. (You wouldn't eat a whole sausage by itself. For one thing, it's far too greasy.) When I make chorizo and egg burritos, I usually cook the chorizo until it is well done, absorb most of the grease with paper towels, and then scramble the eggs into the remaining sausage. The mixture goes into a large, warm flour tortilla, with the option of adding shredded cheddar cheese and free-holy beans. Wrap it all up tight and it is a meal unto itself. I would caution you about ordering a chorizo burrito from a Mexican restaurant, though. Some probably don't go through the trouble of removing all the grease from the sausage and you will end up having a lava flow of grease running down your arm upon the first bite.

I don't think I have Ned, I'm sure I would have remembered all that grease. I think we will be taking your advice on where to eat in San Antone, we had some really bad food from the stands in the R.C.M last time we were there, and the spider in the salad at "Joe's Crab Shack"we will never forget!

Tradin' posts were also a stop along a rough journey to trade, eat, and have conversation before getting back on the road. This food conversation is very appropriate!

A decent copy of: The Mexican Soldier Hefter, Nieto, Brown That's probably a hard find. Have you tried Abe's Books online? They're essentially a bookfinder and, if it's out there, they can get it for you. (Hey Al, how come you're signed on as a 'guest'?)

It appears that there are 2 ways to post. If I enter name etc, for each post, I get to keep my original handle, which I've had on all my message boards for the past 10 years. If I login on entry to this site, I have to sign in as alalamo. Confuses me too.
I tried Abe's but didn't find the book. I was once able to borrow a copy through the library system and made some copies, but I still would like to have the book. When I visited Tom Feely in Ridgefield NJ, he showed me a copy he owned and was really proud to be a possessor or one. Don't blame him.
I wish that someone would be commissioned (maybe Gary Z) to compile all of Hefter's artwork of Mexican soldatos, any period, plus Chartrand's work, and Gary's in a single book. There could be addendum issues as more data is discovered. Some of the more recent finds have the 'flashings' on the grenadiers cuffs as being in three as opposed to the long standing two.
Just want to say, my father-n-law just passed away this week. What a great individual he was. A few years ago, he showed me the discharge of his great Grandfather from the 1st NJ reg. 1863. He was one of the first men in NJ to volunteer and his unit became part of the Army of the Potomac. Just last week, I found out via a message board, that he also has another ancestor who served in the 1st NJ Cav. The children of these two ACW vets married and had a child who became my f-in-l's grandparent.

Here's the first incarnation of the TRADIN' POST. Because it's had almost 1,000 hits, I thought I would bump it up for common interest's sake.
