Didn't work much on the diorama yesterday. Plastered over the Low Barrack walls and began scoring all of the stones on the front wall. A time consuming task, but a somehow relaxing one, all the same. Once you get going, you just don't want to stop. One thing I shoud do however, is to get one of those dust masks. (I used to use one for mowing the lawn.) The residue from the plaster of Paris is irritating the membranes in my nostrils.

Put on Dimitri Tiomkin's score in the background while you're doing it and you may find it even more relaxing.

Put on Dimitri Tiomkin's score in the background while you're doing it and you may find it even more relaxing. Good idea. I'd have to use a portable player though, as the diorama is in the garage.

Put on Dimitri Tiomkin's score in the background while you're doing it and you may find it even more relaxing. I took your advice today and played the Tiomkin soundtrack in the garage on a portable tape player. (Remember those?) The tracks sped by in what seemed like a few minutes, as I worked on the diorama. The front wall of the Low Barrack is just about done, now.

By your estimation, how long will it take before the entire compound is complete?

By your estimation, how long will it take before the entire compound is complete? Well, the first two months saw the completion of the Alamo chapel and Long Barrack. But they are the most difficult buildings in the compound to work on. Most of March was taken up by High Holy Days and its aftermath. I could probably finish the Low Barrack in a week, or so. Then there's the lunette, main gate doors and windows to contend with. It's not like I'm going great guns at it at this point, but I should probably have the SW corner done in a month, or so. The west wall, another month, north, the same, NW maybe 3 weeks. Then there's the terrain building, shrubbery and grass to deal with. Pretty intricate and slow going. Finally, if I average painting around 10 figures a day, I reckon that's another 90 days, at least. Setting up and choreographing the battle just the way I want it will take...?

More difficult then I imagined... Well, you just have to enjoy doing something like this. Getting there is half the fun. Once it's done, well, there it is.

Finished glueing down and plastering the seams on the Low Barrack today. Tomorrow will be the "roof raising".
Then, it's on to the lunette and SW corner.

One thing thats most important is not to burn out. When i did my Waterloo diorama in 1/76 scale, I focused on the fight for Hougemount. I hand painted about 1000 french troops and about 300 british and it totally burned me out. I haven't attempted to do another since..

That's a lot of figures, Mike. I bought rougly 200 more Airfix ones, so the new diorama should have about 1000 figures: 100 something Texian and 900 Mexican.
I find I'm putting less time into it a day and enjoying it more. It's not like the urgent rush to get the chapel and Long Barrack done.
By the way, do you still have the Waterloo diorama, Mike, or at least photos of it you can post?
