Was the number on the back of a helmet so that a ranger could be swiftly identified in the field? Or was it so other Rangers would know in which direction to go without having to think for even a split second?

For identification, all D-Day soldiers (US) had their regimental/Division markings on their helmets. Look at the films To Hell and back, Band of Brothers, Battleground and Saving Private Ryan, they all had correct markings on their helmets.

Some more additions. I just applied the decals so you can see the decal solvent around them. (have to wait 24 hours before i can whipe them off)

All are M42's and the one without any decals is an M16.
