Body armor has come a long way since the knights of old. From the chain mail to brightly polished armor plates of Sir Robin (the chased) Since the early 1950's, military body armor consisted of layers of ballistic nylon sewn into a canvas vest. It would only stop slow moving projectiles from grenade and artillery fragmentation and a rifle bullet would pass completely thru the vest along with the person wearing it. Through out the late 50's and into the 60's, The DOD had hardly improved on the design except it now had a 3/4 collar and nylon replaced the old canvas. It pretty much stayed the same intill 1984 when Kevlar came into the picture. The new vest would stop fragmentation but it would also stop all known pistol calibers. Rifle projectiles except for the .22 would still pass thru. The new "Interceptor" vest has two removable ceramic plates made of aluminum oxide and will stop .308, 3006Ap rounds Here is a photo of a Marine who was saved by one of these plates. As you can see, the plate took at least two hits and only bruised the Troopers back. I have to get one of those...
