Black powder expert John Hinnant, of San Antonio has been building and shooting black powder weapons for years and always manages to comes out on top in competitions. I had the opportunity to meet John back in March, 2005 and then again in October, 2005. In March, John brought some of his hand-crafted black powder weapons to Alamo Village in Bracketville, so that some of us there could use them for photo props. Danny Tulley, with Mo Jones, of Wales, Virginia Shahan (owner of Alamo Village) Davy Webb, of Ft. Worth, Ned Huthmacher, of California and John Hinnant, of San Antonio. All the black powder weapons you see here were built by Mr. Hinnant. But in October, John invited some of us to his local shooting club where we had the opportunity to fire muskets, flintlocks, winchesters and Colt pistols. It was great fun. ( PHOTOS COURTESY OF DAVID WEBB JR. ) [glow=red,2,300]Here's a link to a review of John Hinnant's book: [/glow]www.saubier.com

i would love to get into gunsmithing! It is indeed an art worth emulating. Just handling and shooting John's black powder weapons and then reading about the precision and patience it takes to create one of them, makes me appreciate them, all the more. By the way, Greg, you never did post a photo of your prop weapon from THE ALAMO (2004).

I was a armorer when i was in the Navy on my first ship. Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are the duties of an armorer? To see that all arms and ordinance are well maintained, or what?

Exactly We also did minor gunsmithing duties as well, along with keeping the inventory straight and make sure what when we issue a firearm, we get it back. I loved that job ;D
