I was pleasantly surprized to find information on the web regarding Washington-on-The Brazos, as it appears today. Seems as though a nice reconstruction of the town is open to the public as a living history site, much like Colonial Williamsburg. Within this building, Texas Independence was declared on March 2, 1836. Another view of Texas' 'Independence Hall'. Some more of the town. Another rudely built building. A living historian gives a demonstration of a cotton gin. If anyone has had the opportunity to visit the site, please fill us in on the experience. It certainly looks like a trip worth the taking.

It's 176.60 miles from San Antonio to Washington-On-The-Brazos. Driving time, approx. 3 hours 35 minutes.

This is the house of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. Like much of Washington-on the-Brazos, it has been used in several period films, including, the 1987 Sam Elliott movie, GONE TO TEXAS and the 1997 TRUE WOMEN, starring Dana Delaney and Angelina Jolie. In GONE TO TEXAS, it is used, oddly enough, as the residence of Cherokee Chief Bowles. When Sam Elliott, as Houston arrives at the Cherokee camp by boat, he steps off here, at this point on the Brazos river. The house is just a short walk away. Here, school children on a field trip get to experience some good old fashioned work at the Anson Jones House. Rear view of the Anson Jones House, showing the kitchen.

Ruins of an old bridge, on the Brazos River. Texian Army encampment at Washington-On-The-Brazos. Period docent explains the history of the community to some school children. Pigpen, at Washington-On-The Brazos. Living historian, in a doorway. Smithy shop. Houses.

Scuttlebutt over on the Alamo Film Site suggests that there may possibly be a bus trip to Washington-On-The-Brazos from San Antonio scheduled as part of the High Holy Days activities. Stay posted...

Now that I live so 'close' by, I'll have to make an honest effort to go there. So much Texas history, all in one place!
