Is there any evidence that Sam Houston ever wore a do? You know, that tuft of whiskers right below the lower lip. I like Dennis Quaid's performance, but the do is beginning to bother me. All the photos and paintings I've seen of the real Gen'ral Sam show no evidence of a do. Did I miss even one?

Ex-Beatle Ringo Starr used to wear one. He called it his 'third eyebrow'.

Well, despite the complaints about Tom Skerrit's chin-whisker portrayal, it's a fact that Gen'ral Sam would sometimes sport a full beard when he was in a fit of depression....or, just too drunk to find his razor.

These three illustrations appear in Sam Houston's official biography of 1855. A bearded Houston, dictating orders to his aide, Major Hockley. A bearded Houston has his 2nd horse shot out from under him at San Jacinto. A bearded Houston accepts Santa Anna's Surrender.

I reckon that Gen'ral Sam's auto-bio orter be a reliable source for such a rarely known depiction of his chin-whiskery at the time of the battle. Especially, since it is consistently shown in every engraving posted above. Apparently, Tom Skerritt, or his director, is due more credit for such accuracy than is accredited. Kudos to Nef for his support.

An added notation -
I also notice that the engravings from the auto-bio show a broad-brimmed hat rather than the older-fashioned tri-corner, which we have seen in that very famous painting of Gen'l Sam on horseback at San Jac. What was the original source to depict Gen'l Sam in such a topper? Did he actually wear one at other times based on people's description of him, or was this the painter taking artistic license?
