Has there ever been a published scientific archaeological dig of the Alamo and it's grounds? IN 1980, Jack Eaton published a book called:  Jack Eaton's 1977 dig concentrated on an area near the Alamo facade and the palisade trench. This 4 x 5 trench contained many pottery fragments, buttons, cartridges, nails, musket balls and other bits of iron work. No human remains, though. Here's a map showing all the archeological digs done on the Alamo property, prior to 1980:  In the early 1980's Jake Ivey did some digs in the area of the south wall, including the lunette, or tambour. It is thanks to Jake that we have our modern perception of the lunette and main gate defense works. While Mark Lemon uses much of Mr. Ivey's research in his upcoming book on Alamo architecture, Jake's book remains unpublished to date. I wish someone would encourage him to release it; the interest is certainly there. |

I discovered in the last couple of years that I have a 3rd great grand uncle who died in the Alamo in 1836. I have been doing research on him ever since. His name was Lewis Johnson B: 1812 in Illinois Territory. Lewis and his brother Francis Johnson were enlisted and served at the siege OF Bexar, in Dec 1835. Francis is my 3rd great grand father confirmed by DNA test through Ancestry.com.
My mother, Elsie Johnson (Wilson), lives in Dublin, TX, The whole family of Johnson have been in Texas since 1829 ( 186 years). Francis Johnson was killed and scalped by Comanche Indians in Kimble County, Tx in Oct 1867. Four more Johnson were killed on February 5th, 1868, in the Massacre at Legion Valley. Francis Johnson's wife was Elizabeth Irvin Townsend, sister of the Seven Townsend Brothers of Texas. Everette Ewing Townsend is known as "The Father of Big Bend National Park.
Two of the Townsend were killed as lawmen, one a Texas Ranger and the other a constable.
Finally, Sion Record Bostick, a scout rounding up Mexican soldiers after the Battle of San Jacinto, captured General Santa Ana and returned him to General Huston. Sion was married to Susan Townsend, daughter of Asa Townsend, Sheriff of Colorado County, TX.
My family has a great history in Texas' past.
