I lost my copy so I can't recall the volume, issue, date or page number. Author's name was Dana Funk or Funck. Told the story of Andy Thomas and how he acquired Crockett's rifle through trade. The gun weighed 27 pounds and was originally made for over-the-log match shooting (See the film SRGT. YORK with Gary Cooper for example) Crockett traded rifles with young Andy because the rifle was just too long and heavy. Andy parted with Crockett and was spared from death. The gun remained in the family until 1950's and donated or loaned to the Alamo I've seen this gun several times and would like to have a replica but not at 27 pounds! FWIW The rifle had a silver star inlay in the stock when Crockett owned it. Andy would take the gun to a gunsmith to be converted to percussion. The smith did the work but pried the silver star out and stole it. He left the gun but fled the scene. Andy searched for the thief but never saw him again. The rifle has a 44" barrel in .50 caliber. Double set triggers and is brass mounted. The gun does not have a patchbox and is plain. The lock is English and changed to cap lock which was common in 1840's. Any help appreciated.
