Not since the 1836 Restaurant on the Riverwalk closed it doors back in the late 1980's has there been an Alamo/Texas Revolution-themed restaurant in downtown San Antonio. Lucky I was that Martin Vasquez and Adam Dominguez of King's X made me aware of the place today. Located on Houston Street just around the corner of the Tomb Rider Ride on Houston and Alamo Plaza, Moses Rose's Hideout may prove to be a new High Holy Days hangout for Alamo buffs. Opened only three weeks ago, the place is still undergoing remodeling and painting, but what is there so far is encouraging. With Alamo-themed decor, including it's "humped" bar and with Alamo flags festooning its walls, Moses Rose's Hideout would be the perfect place for reenactors to gather after a reenactment, or just for a party. It has a full bar with "all day" Happy Hour service that includes $3.00 margaritas and $3.00 draft beer. A 16 oz Lone Star is only $2.75. It's Mexican Food, Burgers and Snacks are tantilizing enough to make you want to stay for more than beer sipping. I had "the Bonham", an enormous grilled Bleu Cheese burger with a basketful of large shoestring style fries that I could not manage to finish. It's bartender, "The Original Benjamin", had previously Maitre D'ed on the Texas Southern Railroad, a nightly dinner train excursion through Central Texas. It's owner, Vince Cantu, promises live music every night and "prices that cannot be beat for a downtown Bar & Grill."

The Moses Rose's Hideout is located just beyond the Woolworth building's overhang, beneath that yellow awning where that couple are seen walking on the left.

The gift shop, when finished, should have some Alamo, Texas related items for sale.

A couple of the performers were practicing at the Alamo-humped bar when I arrived.

The bartender (The Original Benjamin) told me the "true" history behind Moses Rose's Hideout. It seems that, after Colonel Travis had drawn his famous line in the dirt, asking all those who would stay with him to cross over, Moses Rose instead jumped the Alamo wall and crawled to the location of the restaurant where he hid out until the battle was over, eventually making his escape. If the skeptic needs any concreteproof, The Original Benjamin will show him, or her the secret panel covering the hideout Rose ducked into. I was convinced.

Looks like a great restaurant! Will have to try it if/when I can make it to San Antonio.
