This just in from Rich Curilla at Alamo Village. As bad as it sounds, let's not all give up hope yet.
Friends, as much as I hate to post this, "when it's time, it's time." It has already been sent to the local newspapers.
ALAMO VILLAGE CLOSED
After a valiant attempt to keep Alamo Village available to visitors on a limited basis, the family has made the painful decision to close it permanently. This will be effective immediately.
After being totally closed to the public on July 1, 2009, due to the death of owner and rancher Virginia Webb Shahan, Alamo Village was re-opened in March on a reduced schedule. This was in response to constant requests from travelers and buffs wishing to photograph the sets, walk the famous streets and stand on the ramparts of John Wayne’s Alamo.
During the last six months the gates have admitted people from all over the United States as well as Canada, England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, France, Wales, Japan and other countries. Several professional and fine art photographers were hosted as well as a video shoot for the redesigned website of the real Alamo in San Antonio.
It is to be lamented that this American Film icon, lauded by people from all over the world will no longer be available. Family and management alike wish to thank all those who have contributed their hearts, talents and hard work to Alamo Village over the past fifty years.

Saw that on Rich's Facebook this morning. It truly is a shame. I'm glad I got to go there once in my life. But you guys must have so many memories.
Is there any chance at all it will be bought and reopened?

Well, Labor Day Weekend is upon us, to many, the last unofficial days of Summer. I'm glad that my 1975 visit to Alamo Village just happened to fall on that very weekend. My brother Brian and I got to see live music acts, a horse race, and gunfights in the streets, as well as sample some mighty tasty Alamo Village BBQ. I miss that. Another thing I miss is the people. The place was packed and vibrant and alive. Most kids now-a-days do not know what they are missing and I feel sorry for them. So here's all the best wishes for Alamo Village II: The Sequel. May it survive and continue to inspire people for at least another 50 years.

PER RICH CURILLA: Penny Campbell-Loewen (a past employee of Alamo Village and colleague) has just created ALAMO VILLAGE REUNION, a new page on FACEBOOK. It is designed as a reminiscence of the place, the people and the legacy. Lots of wonderful pictures (please do not pilfer). Do check it out. The link is: www.facebook.com/pages/Alamo-Village-Reunion/154807331212610NOTE: Apparently to join, all you have to do is click the "Like" button and you're in.

The amazing Waynamo set. Travis' headquarters really took a hit, didn't it? I can see John Ford's TWO RODE TOGETHER wall above the main gate, so I guess this might be 1962.

Waynamo facade with remnant tiles from the BARBAROSA hacienda on the left. Notice the telltale line from the hacienda roofline is still on the facade? The cedar palisade was built over Happy Shahan's $7,500 BANDOLERO wall to conceal it. March, 1986

A flyer for Johnny Rodriguez's 60th birthday batch accompanied this email I just received today:
Howdy, Mr. Huthmacher! You might be interested in this event. Tickets went on sale today. Please see the attached flyer. Gaby Ginn Hill and I have managed to contact several AV employees from over several decades and are still searching! Gaby was told by the venue manager today that "the phone was ringin' off the wall" by 11:00 AM by folks wanting tickets. So it's encouraging that our PR work and word of mouth have started this thing off well. Please share this info with anyone else that you think may have interest. Also, if you feel free to share contact info for anyone who was an AV employee, please send to me or to Gaby, gabyghill@hotmail.com. Dottsy will be featured, so we're happy about her participation. Valentino plans to attend, but his health isn't good, so he will thinks that he will sing with us AVers as a group on stage for one song, "Okie from Muskogee". He's really looking forward to seeing old pals from his band, etc. Gaby has communicated with Jamie and Tully, and they are good with her plans and seem appreciative of this tribute to Alamo Village and their parents, Happy and Virginia, who made it possible for lots of folks to spend memorable times at the Village. Since it's Johnny Rodriguez's 60th, the birthday theme is alive and well, and his fans will be there, too. We are also happy that St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Bulverde will benefit, www.stjudesranch.org. Part of the ticket proceeds and ALL of the commemorative merchandise net sales will go for making a nice Christmas for the kids. If you want to know more, I'm sure that Gaby will be happy to tell you. She's the planner, coordinator, and the one in charge. She's worked hard to make this an impressive, fun event for all who attend. Thanks for your time, Connie connie_huse_nightingale@yahoo.com Attachments:
