Here's a LINK to the upcoming first annual (of many, we hope) Toy Soldier Show in San Antonio. ' www.sdsoldiers.com/texas_show.htm' It is sponsored by Toy Soldiers of San Diego, a fine new plastic soldier and playset maker... There are a LOT of new product comin' out re: the Blessed Alamo. I for one plan to bring my limited-edition Ron Lizorty "Dreamwish Playsets" ALAMO box - with Ron's interpretation of The Duke Davey prominent on the lid! ' paul

There was a Toy Soldier store about 2 hours from me in pennsylvania called "Queen's Arms Toy Soldier Shop" They had beautiful figures especially of Zulu Warriors and Rorke's Drift defenders but it was like $300 for a set of 5. Not from my Wallet!

When I was working on my H o scale model of the Alamo, I would paint around five soldado figures a day and the whole process would sometimes take up to 6 hours. Now, you're talking about five meticulously hand-painted 54mm figures. I'm guessing that it must've taken at least two hours each to complete, or ten hours work. Broken down to dollars and cents, that's around 30 dollars an hour for the artist. A bit steep perhaps, but good work and a steady hand does deserve some compensation. (Especially when the purchaser has absolutely no intentioin of sacrificing hours of his or her time on such a project.)
Remember RebAl's beautifully done Civil War model figures? Ask him how much time he put into each. I'll bet he'll tell you 'weeks'.

Nef is correct its definitely a time consuming hobby painting minature figures. First off you need to cut the parts off the sprue and file all the edges, checking for any faults in the moulding, then I drill each of the parts and insert brass rod for extra strength before glueing them all together any gaps need to be filled with Milliput putty and then filed smooth once it sets. Then a decent base needs to be made. First off I prime the figure with spray paint normally a couple of coats, once dried the figure is painted with acrylic paint using all the correct colors, then artists oil paint ontop of this which needs to be shaded and blended, this procedure takes the longest as oil paints take a while to dry. If you could do it all in one go it would probably take about 4 days full work. To get an idea of the cost of models check out this site www.histomin.com/linemrl/pgmrlacw.htm the JEB Stuart mounted figure is being sold for $921 and that doesn't include postage. I assembled and painted four of these figures (120mm scale about 8 inches high)three for friends in the States and charged them nothing, the following picture is the one I have here at home.

That's absolutely magnificent work Al! I would love to do that as a hobby put I dont think i have the patience for spending hours first putting the soldier together and then painting it. Those soldiers would be flying across the room within an hour.
