Looks like quite a bit of fooferawin' went on there... It do. It's a wonder that any of the set is left, after Wayne blew it to pieces.

Why did Wayne blow it to pieces? I heard some explanation but didn't quite get it all at the time....

Why did Wayne blow it to pieces? I heard some explanation but didn't quite get it all at the time.... It wasn't in that bad of shape from the mock bombardment. Wayne purposely bulldozed about a third of the west wall in preparation for Mrs. Dickinson's exit from the smoking ruins of the fort in the film's finale. Duke wanted a clear shot of the Alamo chapel in the background and the west wall paid the price for it.

Bowie's men enter the Alamo. (Photo courtesy of Craig Covner)(Notice how Al Ybarra tweaked the end of the south wall down to almost nothing? This was probably done to better accentuate the Alamo chapel. The current height of the south wall at Brackettville is probably closer to that of the historical Alamo.)

Is this pic from after the shooting, since the cross is laying on the ground?

Is this pic from after the shooting, since the cross is laying on the ground? Which photo are you referring to? The one directly above shows the cross directly behind the hump, being supported by the small cannon platform. The tripod that the cross was moved around with for different scenes is seen at the righthand side of the large cannon platform. (The tripod was originally used to haul up the big gun to the platform in the scene where Bowie and his men are riding into the fort.)
