The wounded Marine in the middle is a 1st/sgt i can't recall his name, He saved the lives of seven Marines during the battle of fallujah. While clearing out the town seven marines were cut off and surrounded in a house.
Several of them were wounded and called for help on the radio. The 1st/sgt volunteered along with several others to mount a rescue untill the rest of the company could reorganize and help out.
They fought their way to the house and by the time they got there, all seven were wounded. While clearing out the rest of the building, he was jumped my several insurgents.
He was shot in the chest by one of the insurgents, but his vest protected him. He raised his M16 and put a burst into the insurgents chest dropping him. The others ran into different rooms of the house.
While the rest of his men cleared the building, he attemped to give medical treatment to the fallen Marines when a grenade was thrown into the room from a different room, he covered the closest wounded Marine with his body and took most of the blast.
Right after the explosion, another insurgent entered the room and fired all 30 rounds from his AK47, hitting the 1st/sgt several times, mostly in his hip and right leg.
His M16 was damaged in the blast so he used his M9 9mm pistol and held off several more insurgent "Charges" via his pistol and hand to hand combat untill his men arrived from clearing the rest of the house
Three of the wounded Marines died but he saved the rest by covering them with his weapon untill help arrived from his Company.
The photo shows him being helped out of the house by a Navy Corpsman on the left and a Marine on the right.
He needed several operations to fix his hip and right femuar, but his right leg is now 2 1/2 inches shorter.
He has been recommended for the Congressional Medal Of Honor by his officers and other ranks.
He is a true hero in every sence of the word.
Notice that his M9 pistol is still at the ready..
