That question is going to get you a lot of different answers.
"One-Eyed" Brigido Guerrero, one of Seguin's men, purportedly did call for quarter from Santa Anna and it was granted him. Henry Warnell, a "wiry little jockey", as Walter Lord puts it, is said to have also escaped from the Alamo, only to die a while later, due to his wounds. It is interesting to note that Warnell was a jockey. Did he perhaps grab a stray horse and then give the Dolores cavalry a run for their money? I would like to think so.

I also read that there was one Tejano man who told Santa Anna that he was held prisoner by the Texians. It is said that Santa Anna didn't believe him but let him go anyway.

Thanks for the answers, guys! This Seguin fellow, Guerrero, where´s he mentioned? As for the the jockey Warnell. Did they really have jockey as an occupation back then? It seems like Joe is the only verified male survivor. Other male survivors appears to be hear-say...

There's also an obscure account of two other black slaves having survived the battle. One was called "Black Betty" and the other "Charlie". Seems that Betty was supposed to haver been Jim Bowie's cook. So said Juana de Navarro Alsbury.
During the battle, so her account goes, Betty and Charlie were in the 'cocina', or cooking hut that ran north off of the Low Barrack. When the Mexican soldiers ran into the hut, Charlie is said to have grabbed a Mexican officer to use for a shield. Seems that Charlie would not let the officer go, until he was given the promise of freedom. Charlie was wild-eyed in distress, the officer was likewise in distress, while the soldados present seemed to take the whole thing as some kind of morbid joke. But the officer wasn't laughing. He made the soldados promise to spare Charlie and Betty and they did so. While interesting, this account has not been corroborated by any other account, as far as I know.

Nef, I have tried to order your book at your Amazon address, but at "check-out" they won´t accept my address! This is curious, because I ordered a bunch of Alamo stuff and you and another seller were the only two who did´nt accept my address, all the others did! Can I order a signed copy with a dedication from your site at freewebs? I have a Visa card and Paypal too?

You can get the copy on eBay and go immediately to Paypal from there. If you want to get the copy from freewebs however, I will PM you the Paypal email address. Let me know how you would like the book inscribed in the PM. Thanks, Ned

A few days ago, author Frank Thompson was giving a talk on the Alamo at a conference in San Antonio and had this to say about it, over on thealamofilm site:
Y'know, Nef, just yesterday (June 22) I was in San Antonio yakking at strangers about the Alamo. The whole conference went to dinner together at La Fonda and during the meal, a very, very attractive young teacher said to me, "You know what would make a great novel? The story of Travis's slave, Joe." And I said, "Lady, hold onto something -- I'm about to make you very happy." And I did. Oh, and later, I told her about "One Domingo Morning."

Neff have you found out or heard any new info on Joe since you wrote your book? ;D I know there is not alot known about him but hey you never know when something relevent will come up or be discovered! Have there ever been relations/friends searching or looking for Joe from 1836 up to his death or after? One must also wonder what his real name was and how and or who may have treated his wound/wounds suffered at the Alamo? TED COLE....aka....Cole_blooded

If there is some new information on Joe however, I would love to see it. A few years back, there was a rumor that two authors were collaberating on a biography of Joe, but I have not heard anything since. To them, I say, good luck. As it is, with the information we now have, a biography of Joe would make for a nice 30 page pamphlet.
