The late singer Buddy Holly, who hailed from Lubbock, Texas loved THE SEARCHERS. He even wrote a song using one of the lines that Duke's character Ethan Edwards repeats throughout the film: That'll Be The Day.

I was watching STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE the other night and was surprized to see a familiar scene from THE SEARCHERS being reenacted. It's the one where Martin Pauley (Jeffrey Hunter) is shown leaping down from the platte at night in order to save Debbie (Natalie Wood) from the Indian camp. In the STAR WARS version , Young Anakin Skywalker jumps down from an identical height in an attempt to rescue his mother from the Tusken Raiders camp. The setup of the scene is exact. Could Lucas have been a big THE SEARCHERs fan?

I looked further into it and it seems that Lucas also used a scene from THE SEARCHERS in the original STAR WARS movie. When Luke Skywalker returns to his uncle s burning farm to find both his uncle and Aunt slaughtered, it's supposed to be a takeoff of when Ethan Edwards (Wayne) and Martin Pauley ( Hunter) return to Ethan's brother's farm to find it in a similar situation.

I always smile when I hear these lines from THE SEARCHERS.
Mrs. Jorgensen: "It just so happens we be Texicans. Texican is nothin' but a human man way out on a limb, this year and next. Maybe for a hundred more. But I don't think it'll be forever. Some day, this country's gonna be a fine good place to be. Maybe it needs our bones in the ground before that time can come."
Mr. Jorgensen: "Mama, she was a school teacher, you know!"
School teacher, ay? Then why doesn't she speak proper English?
