William D. Sutherland was either born in Alabama or Virginia near the Clinch River where his father was born. He was the nephew of John Sutherland who road out on Feb 23 and returned after the battle was over.

He was the nephew of John Sutherland who road out on Feb 23 and returned after the battle was over. Funny how Doctor Sutherland never mentions this in his account. (Or, if he does, that I don't remember. Something like that would stay with me for a while, I think.)
