One of the reasons Rich Curilla and I were in town yesterday was to witness the reenactment of the battle of Concepcion. On the foggy morning of October 28, 1835, General Cos sent a reconnaissance foerce of 400 men and two cannon to locate the camp of the Texian army under Steve Austin. At about 6:30AM the Mexican soldiers came upon Jim Bowie's and James Fannin's contingent of about 90 Texian volunteers near the Mission Concepcion. In the ensuing fight, Bowie's men managed to win the day. Well entrenched along the San Antonio riverbank, the Texians picked off the Mexican cannoneers with their long rifles and then drove the rest of that force into retreat. Jim Bowie even led the charge to capture an abandoned cannon and then turned it on the fleeing enemy. In all, the Mexicans lost some 67 in killed and wounded, while the Texians only took one casualty. "Big Dick" Andrews lived up to his name by foolishly rushing out of his place of concealment without orders, only to be shot down. The siege of Bejar was on. Mission Concepcion, yesterday

The Texian position was represented by those two piles of brush; Bowie on the left and Fannin on the right. (Notice the two fellows in the foreground setting pyrotechnic charges to represent Mexican artillery hits.)

One of the reasons for the light Texian casualties was the poor quality of powder the soldados had to use in their muskets. Some of the Texians actually reported being hit several times, but the musket balls merely bounced off of them.

Texian rifles were surer on the mark and their powder was suitable to the task.
